Influencing others
If you missed February’s Leadership and Management Conference at The Business Space, Truro hosted by Cornwall College Business here are five tips to leadership:
When a Leader wants to influence others to encourage them to follow – remember:
• By using captivating words from all 4 quadrants of the brain – BLUE/RED/GREEN/YELLOW, you are more likely to engage interest from ‘all’ the people in your audience
• When talking to an individual, figure out beforehand and during the conversation those things that are important to the person – is it the : Logic and facts: detail and sequence: big picture and visual: Other people and their feelings
• Take time to get to know the key influencers (not always the managers) and use the communication style best suited to engage them
• Understanding what others expect in a communication and appreciate from others will inspire others and keep them onside
• Practice and challenge yourself to communicate differently using the 4 quadrant model.
Tips taken from William ‘Ned’ Herrmann’s Diversity Model:
The Herrmann four quadrant brain dominance model, can be thought of as a blending of the left brain/right brain, upper (thought) and lower (emotion) into a physiologically based metaphor of how the brain works.
A UPPER LEFT – blue Uses facts to illustrate points. Very matter of fact. Expresses emotions as abstract. Appears to display little or no emotion regardless of the situation
D UPPER RIGHT – yellow Asks questions that lead to other questions. Why? How? Speaks in phrases Stops in mid-sentence thinking others obviously know what they are talking about. Very abstract in speaking—uses metaphors and musical words.
B LOWER LEFT – green Asks questions that have answers. Who? What? When and Where? Speaks in sentences and paragraphs. Completes sentences and paragraphs. Very concrete in speaking.
C LOWER RIGHT red Face is animated—eyes flash, etc. Uses expansive non verbal gestures. Uses stories to illustrate points. Talks about feelings. Talks out loud or to self to learn.

Delicious Partnership at the Business Space
The Business Space in Truro has announced an appetising new partnership with local catering business, de lunch.
Cornwall College Business’ meeting and conference venue, The Business Space, hosts meetings, courses, conferences and training in its versatile accommodation and has a daily requirement for fresh and interesting catering options, including breakfasts, lunches, cakes, canapés and evening buffets. The Business Space is now working with de lunch to provide a greater variety of refreshment options for clients.
de lunch is run by Truro based entrepreneur, Clare Austin who set up a catering business after looking for a career change. She now provides delegates and clients of the Business Space with an evolving and variable new menu that includes homemade scotch eggs, sushi, salads, samosas, filled baguettes and homemade cakes.
Jess Bartlett, Centre Manager at the Business Space said: “We are delighted to be working with Clare and de lunch to provide our clients with tasty refreshments that go beyond the usual sandwiches and cake that you expect on a course. de lunch’s food is fresh, different and tailored to suit our customers’ specific requirements and we have been amazed by the amount of excellent positive feedback from delegates that we have received so far.”
Clare Austin said: “My company started out as a humble lunch round and before long, companies were asking me to cater for their corporate events, just through word of mouth. Working with the Business Space has allowed me to employ more staff, move to a bigger kitchen and launch my product range to large convenience stores and bakery chains. It really has been a breath of fresh air to work with such a professional, organised and friendly company. I very much appreciate the scope that this has given me to experiment with different foods, so that there is constant variety and the Business Space clients get to experience a range of fun, fresh buffets.”
The Business Spaces are purpose-designed meeting and conference venues ideally situated in the heart of Truro, Plymouth and Launceston, with facilities including interactive whiteboards, video conferencing, IT suite, projectors and wireless access. Visit the Business Space website to find out more at www.thebusinessspace.co.uk, call 0800 731 7594 or email info@thebusinessspace.co.uk.
